REHABILITATION AND RE-CONSTRUCTION IN KUTCH (GUJARAT)

GOONJ..
got into action from the next day
i.e. 27th of January itself

Our volunteers organized collection of material in different localities, also a special collection camp was organised for ten days and a large quantity of eatables, clothes, woolens were sent to Gujarat, along with a large number of utensils, which were the main targeted item of GOONJ..

GOONJ.. Joined hands with CAF India and made sure that the volunteers themselves took care of the proper distribution in Kutch.

GOONJ..
has taken up the work of reconstruction and rehabilitation in one of the villages - Harudi, 25 km. from Bhuj. The village of 143 houses had been completely destroyed, including the School, Aanganwari and other common places.

.
GOONJ.. is putting in its efforts to develop a community center, build schools and an Aanganwari and help develop a small health center . Work on the Community center and School has already been started.

Also, the main focus is on employment generation and restoration. Kutch is known all over the world for its excellent quality of embroidered and woven materials. The women of Harudi have also embibed these skills as part of their culture and traditions. But, these women neither got an opportunity to develop these skills nor the marketing opportunity for their work. After the earthquake they have been forced work as labourers in order to recover their losses.

GOONJ..
is trying to help them return to their core competencies and improve their own efficiency, so that they can earn more out of their traditional profession itself. Also there is now a greater need to provide them with marketing opportunities so that after some time they can work as a self sufficient co-operative group.

All these programmes in Harudi need financial support of about 15 lakh rupees.

Harudi is still lucky to get some support from GOONJ.. and other organizations but still there are a lot of villages who have not received any kind of help or support. GOONJ.. wishes to target more such areas, in case it gets some support from the donor agencies and organisations..
