RAHAT FLOODS
MAIN ACTIVITIES - YEAR 2004

GOONJ.. has been initiating this campaign for the last three years for the flood victims of Assam, Bihar & West Bengal, where floods have become an annual ritual.

The prime concern was to make this annual affair a matter of concern.Through many years we have been trying to make efforts to register this as a disaster in the minds of people.

This year the campaign has been very successful in all these aspects. The camps we organised were very successful and people appreciated the fact that someone is working for this cause too..

A number of corporate houses, educational institutions, residential societies, voluntary organisations joined hands with us.

We have been able to dispatch large consignments not just from Delhi but also from Kolkata & Mumbai
(So far over 3 truck loads )

Apart from Assam, Bihar & West Bengal, we sent relief materials to the Bansakantha & Sabarkantha areas of Gujarat, areas which faced the trauma of devastating floods this year.

We appreciate
    • The efforts of CAF India in looking for a sponsor for this campaign.
    • PSA of The Shri Ram school for their financial support.
    • All three branches of Shri Ram School for motivating children and their parents to become a part
of this campaign which resulted in a huge collection of material from all its branches.

    • NSS wing of IIT Delhi for organising a very successful drive .

Dispatch from Kolkata

The
prestigious Bengal Rowing Club of West Bengal worked as a collection point. Initiated by our volunteers Mr. Rajeev Goenka & Mrs. Prerna Goenka, the campaign was very successful. The sorting  was undertaken by volunteers and Mr. Anshu k. Gupta at Mr. Rajeev Goenka's house. One TATA 407 material has been dispatched, as per details given below.

After
travelling, we identified some areas in the Sunderban area (
Ganga ghat) where flood is an annual phenomena and still thousands of people live without electric connections. With the support of local CBOs . we have initiated a "Cloth for work programme" in this area and the villagers will be working for repairing of roads etc and will be getting the material instead of cash. Mr. Dilip Banerjee ( Ashoka Fellow), known for his innovative work in the flood affected areas is monitoring the entire exercise there.
