The idea of recycling is not new, but setting up a distribution
network to enable scale and reach the poor, is. Goonj, a New Delhi-based
NGO, works through partners in 14 states through 100 agencies. |

Goonj
runs a nation-wide "vastradaan" programme that networks
with over 100 local NGOs in 13 States. In Kashmir, it runs the programme
in partnership with the Army. According to Mr. Gupta, while 60 per
cent of the clothes could be distributed straightaway, some 15 per
cent required mending. Some 25 per cent were fit only for recycling
as napkins. "Not an inch of cloth is wasted," he said. |

"Goonj’s
philosophy revolves around a widely-known but seldom-implemented
philosophy: one person’s rags can indeed be someone elses
riches, especially in context of India's gigantic urban-rural divide.." |
|
"But
he has in fact pioneered a robust reuse model for all manner of
things that a city discards but the poor need. He has raised awareness
and confidence among givers that what they part with will be handled
with care and targeted precisely according to needs.." |

"
By any definition of the word, Anshu Gupta, award-winning founder
of Goonj, is a revolutionary. By transforming simple ideas into
nation-wide movements, this Ashoka Fellow has been redefining traditional
notions of service...." |

"
Goonj makes no tall claims of removing poverty or child labour.
Our endeavour is to make people aware that one city can look after
several villages...." |

"
Today, Goonj has collection centres in almost every major metro. And,
it leads by example — official correspondence is on one-side
used paper and funds also come from selling newspapers (donated by
corporations, schools and colleges)...."

GOONJ is successfully bridging the gap between civil society and businesses:
"A number of leading corporate houses collected material on our
specific guidelines," Gupta said. "Our appeals for material
were specific to the point that when we asked for 2 kg of rice and
a few grams of tea leaf from every child in Delhi schools, we collected
truck loads of rice and tea leaf.

Anshu K Gupta, Director of NGO Goonj, who spent six days in the disaster-affected
areas as part of the Rahat–tsunami relief operations, shares
